Downtown Harrisonburg Expands Shop Local Holiday Events

Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance (HDR) has partnered with the Merchants of Historic Downtown Harrisonburg (HDR) and more than twenty downtown businesses to offer special promotions, refreshments, music, and art for three special events in downtown Harrisonburg during the holiday season. Two of these events will take place this weekend on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, with the third event taking place the weekend of December 13 through 15.

These events are part of an initiative to encourage shoppers to support the local economy and community by making their holiday gift purchases at local businesses. The initiative began in 2011 when Anna Melton Pelletier, owner of downtown Harrisonburg boutique Mint, founded the Shop Til You Drop event. In 2012, HDR and MHDH partnered with Anna and other downtown businesses to expand the event and build upon the success of its first year. This year, downtown business owners wanted to become even more involved and offer shoppers additional options for shopping locally during the holiday season, thus expanding the celebrations to three events.

Black Friday on November 29 can be a daunting day for many shoppers and merchants, as big box stores begin opening and crowds start lining up earlier and earlier each year, with some locations even opening on Thanksgiving evening. The businesses of downtown Harrisonburg wanted to provide a more personal and enjoyable alternative that still offers plenty of great specials along with festive cheer. Some participating locations are opening early and/or closing later to allow for more shopping time. Others are offering festive holiday treats to enjoy while tackling that holiday gift list. And many are offering special pricing and discounts on merchandise.

Small Business Saturday is perhaps best known due to the nationwide promotions by credit card company American Express. While some of downtown Harrisonburg’s businesses will also be participating in the promotions by American Express, this is not a precursor for inclusion in HDR’s Shop Local: Small Business Saturday event. Shoppers interested in the American Express promotion should contact businesses individually to determine if they are participating.

Downtown Food Tours. Downtown restaurants Billy Jack’s Wing & Draft Shack, Capital Ale House, and Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint will also be offering specials.
