The new Asian-fusion restaurant in downtown Harrisonburg, Beyond, has become an instant hit with downtown diners. Since opening on September 10 the restaurant has been filled every night with eager customers — purely on word-of-mouth.
As JMU alum Matt Little described the scene, “I haven’t seen a single ad for this restaurant, but it’s already so popular! It is clearly the new hot spot for downtown.”
Classically trained chef Bobby Scheve plates each item with artistry most often seen in metropolitan eateries. From an extensive tapas menu to a sushi bar to full entrees, this restaurant offers options for every palate preference and price point. On opening night, Rockingham County planner Willy Thompson said, “I was looking forward to another cultural restaurant being downtown. Beyond offers something that has been missing for a long time and their lunch menu is great for meals under 10 dollars.”
“Our goal was to take the guest’s dining experience to the next level combining diverse flavors within a modern environment,” said co-owner Cy Khochareun. To this end, the rehabilitated space matches the menu’s creativity with modern décor, bold pieces of artwork and gallery lighting. More than two hundred patrons can be seated between Beyond’s main floor, loft dining area and outdoor deck. And in a nod to the building’s history as Spanky’s restaurant, the owners preserved a wall filled with Spanky’s trademark customer graffiti.
As executive director of Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, I believe that the numerous downtown restaurants compliment each other rather than compete with each other. The Downtown Dining Alliance has worked to create a downtown dining destination which benefits everyone. We are lucky to have such diverse restaurants in our downtown. Come down to Beyond tonight!
