Thirty-six downtown merchants decked their halls for another season of holiday window shopping. Merchants and restaurateurs have seen increased interest in their displays and plan to leverage that into holiday sales. Many downtown businesses have decided to stay open late on Friday evenings in December to better serve shoppers and attract the growing number of downtown residents into their stores. Businesses with extended hours will have an “Open Late” poster displayed, some even post their holiday hours on Facebook or Twitter.
To recognize the effort of these downtown businesses, Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance assembled a volunteer committee to judge decorated windows and entryways. This year instead of the traditional first, second and third places, committee members picked the top windows within four categories.
Most Traditional: Blue Ridge Florist
Most Festival: Madison Interiors
Most Creative: The Yellow Button
Best Use of Merchandise: Granny Long Legs
HDR events manager Kris Ludwig felt that this method allowed for recognition that downtown shop owners deserve. “It was always so hard to pick between a business that had been really creative with their decorations, verses the one who filled their window with classic décor. There are always a few that stand out and this allowed the committee to recognize each one equally.”
