Friendly City Food Co-op plans to open in 2010

Exciting news – the Friendly City Food Co-op plans to open in 2010!  A lease for the former Mick-or-Mack location in downtown has been signed, a search is underway for a store manager and a strong base of financial and volunteer support has been built within the community.  Yet needed are 175 additional members and, even more importantly, $195,000 in member loans.  Already 825 households have joined and member loans total $405,000.

Due to the terms of the lease, the loan and membership drives need to be completed in the next 3 weeks, and Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance is committed to help.  Attracting a grocery store has been one of our high priorities and fulfillment of that goal is within sight.  The loan and membership needs are very attainable, if we each do our part.

HDR is hosting an informational happy hour at the Local Chop & Grill House on May 5 from 5-7pm.  Please come to loan, to join, to learn and to enjoy complimentary beverages and appetizers from local producers. RSVP is greatly appreciated (but we’ll welcome anyone at the door!): 540.432.8922.

If you are not able to attend, but wish to demonstrate your support at this critical time, contact the Co-op at 540-810-7667 or
