Though the snowstorm created a bit of a challenge mid-week, Taste of Downtown is going strong and gearing up for the weekend. So if you haven’t made it downtown yet, make sure you add us to your plans!
HDR and the Downtown Dining Alliance partner to present this bi-annual restaurant week every March and August, and we’re thankful for support from the community and our dedicated media sponsors, Comcast Spotlight, DIGICO, and WMRA-WEMC.
Taste of Downtown began in 2008 as a once-a-year, five-day event that offered dinner specials from a handful of downtown restaurants. It has since grown to a bi-annual, seven-day event offering specials for every meal and snacks in-between at nearly all of our downtown restaurants and eateries. This March’s event, from March 4th through 10th, features 23 downtown restaurants and eateries in five categories: breakfast; lunch; dinner; sweets, treats, and other eats; and weekend brunch.
New offerings for this year include a breakfast category, expanded weekend brunch, and two participating locations new to the event – New Leaf Pastry Kitchen and Rick’s Cantina.
New Leaf Pastry Kitchen, in the sweets category, is offering a crunchy cream puff filled to order with choice of fillings for $4. Rick’s Cantina will be offering both a lunch special – classic taco salad, soup, and a non-alcoholic beverage for $7.50 – and a dinner special – any specialty burrito, yucca fries or fried plantains, and a draft beer or house margarita for $10.
The breakfast category is being launched by the Artful Dodger, where two special combos will be offered all day and night throughout the event.
Diners can enjoy the following options:
- Good Morning Breakfast Combo: Choice of breakfast entree (Breakfast Quesadilla, Morning Glory Plate, Garden Scramble, Pancakes, or French Toast) and a cup of coffee, signature latte, or cappuccino for $6.
- Hearty Morning Breakfast Combo: Choice of breakfast entree (see above) and a coffee beer, coffee cocktail, bloody mary, or mimosa for $9.
Brunch will now be available on Saturday and Sunday at Billy Jack’s Wing & Draft Shack, as well as on Sunday at Blue Nile and The Corner. We’re also excited to have brand new Harrisonburg brewery 3 Brothers Brewing featured on tap at Billy Jack’s all week.
Taste of Downtown is focused on highlighting the diversity of our locally-owned and -operated downtown restaurants and providing the public with the opportunity to have an enriching dining experience.
Whether trying out a new menu special or a multi-course meal at a reduced rate, diners can enjoy meals and snacks in a variety of atmospheres, ethnic styles, and price ranges.
If you’ve never tried Carribean or Venezuelan food, now’s your chance to try arepas or a Combo Caribeño from Arepera Las Chamas.
Can’t get enough Billy Jack’s sliders? During Taste of Downtown, you can pick and choose all week from 8 options for $1.50 each and quench your thirst with an icy brew from 3 Brothers Brewing! Always wanted to have dinner at LOCAL Chop & Grill House? Treat yourself and enjoy a three-course dinner during Taste of Downtown for only $35.00.

Taste of Downtown is one of my favorite events of the year. It really highlights our locally-owned downtown restaurants and introduces diners to a variety of culinary styles and atmospheres. We’re fortunate to have such a diverse community and I think one of the places this is most evident is in our local food scene. Taste of Downtown is the perfect opportunity to explore this diversity and try something new or revisit an old favorite. See you downtown!
